The Fábrica de Explosivos de Moçambique (FEM), the Municipal Council and the residents of the Mafarinha neighborhood, in Dondo, located in the province of Sofala, have been at loggerheads for more than three years without reaching a consensus.
The nearby population faces the imminent threat of taking drastic measures to dismantle the explosives factory. The factory, on the other hand, persists in demanding the mandatory evacuation of nearby residents.
The number of families affected by the explosives factory is substantial, with more than three hundred families alleging that the factory illegally took over their land. They claim the site is not suitable for housing due to the potential dangers it poses.
As Abrão Timóteo, one of the residents, narrates, the company responsible for handling the explosives began operations without consulting nearby residents.
The argument put forward is that residents of the area were not informed of any compensation that had already been made, despite authorities' claims to the contrary. The authorities' actions have been characterized as destructive and place residents at risk of constant threats.
