Muecate, Nampula Province, was the scene of a frightening incident when an elephant of unknown origin attacked a man aged approximately 30. The attack resulted in serious injuries to the individual's back, leaving the local community in a state of panic.
The large elephant was initially seen in the town of Namahia Gracio, in the Administrative Post of Imala, district of Muecate. It is believed to have migrated from the northern districts of Nacarôa and Eráti before arriving in Imala.
The injured man was surprised by the elephant while walking around his village and lost consciousness after the attack. Fortunately, he was quickly rescued and taken to the local Health Center.
Authorities in Nampula are currently keen to control the movement of the elephant, which is reportedly heading towards the district headquarters of Muecate. There are concerns that the animal could pass through more than four villages on its way.
Local authorities emphasize the importance of populations remaining vigilant regarding any elephant movements and following safety guidelines.
The Muecate district government is awaiting instructions from the Provincial Directorate of Territorial Development and Environment on the next steps to be taken to deal with this worrying situation.
