Following the failure of the 'Famba' project, aimed at facilitating the electronic payment of public transport services for passengers via card, the Maputo Municipal Road Transport Company (EMTPM) announced its plans to invest in the payment system for public transport of passengers, known as 'chapas', through payment terminals (POS).
According to the Domingo newspaper, EMTPM has already acquired 65 POS and is currently in the process of establishing partnerships with mobile phone operators, with the aim of integrating these terminals into a unified system that allows card payments or mobile services. Operators have already shown interest in this new facility.
However, apparently, drivers and collectors show little enthusiasm in adhering to these systems, mainly to prevent vehicle owners from having access to the daily collection record. Additionally, there is reluctance to wait for each passenger to complete payments.
The newspaper reports that to carry out the digitalization of the transport sector, mobile wallet operators should create the necessary conditions for 'plate' operators to have points of sale (POS) that facilitate connection and exchange of information. With this device, a simple tap with your cell phone would be enough to carry out transactions.
In reality, the device is already available in the country, just awaiting interest and adoption from transport operators for the idea to be effectively implemented.
