The Frelimo party announced on Saturday (23) its candidate for mayor of Nampula, Luís Giquira, justifying his choice by the fact that he is native to the region.
Giquira is Frelimo's second choice to lead this municipality, after the first candidate, Manuel Rodrigues, current provincial governor, withdrew from the race.
Giquira's presentation was led by Celso Correia, member of the Frelimo Political Commission and leader of the assistance brigade for the province of Nampula. The ceremony included a march through the main streets of the largest city in the northern region of Mozambique and mobilized thousands of party members and supporters.
Correia repeatedly emphasized that the presentation was not an electoral campaign action, but a way of publicly presenting the eighth mayoral candidate chosen by Frelimo, for a total of eight municipalities in Nampula province. He said: “The election campaign starts on the 26th, so Frelimo had a debt to the city of Nampula and, in this democratic process, we had a choice for our candidate for mayor. That choice is here, it is a person full of energy. He is a young man, a strong bet for our party.”
Correia also highlighted that Luís Giquira is from the city of Nampula and introduced the candidate's family, including his parents, wife and daughter.
In his brief statement, Giquira expressed his commitment to finding solutions to the problems affecting Nampula residents, with a focus on improving healthcare, quality of education, road infrastructure, cleaning and sanitation, combating crime, as well as promoting sport and culture.
