The Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) issued a warning about the circulation of counterfeit notes in illegal foreign currency exchange locations in the city of Maputo. PRM operations resulted in the arrest of an individual who was in possession of R1,400 in counterfeit notes.

PRM spokesperson in the city of Maputo, Marta Pereira, reported: “We have information that these individuals have been involved in this type of activity for three years. We are currently investigating to identify the person responsible for printing the notes and determine whether the machine used is located in Maputo or South Africa.”

According to Notícias, the suspect was approached at the Laulane market, on the outskirts of the urban center, and was in possession of 50 100 rand notes. He told the police that the money belonged to his neighbor's uncle, who had given it to him to exchange in different places. The individual admitted to having started this activity on Wednesday, justifying that he needed money urgently.
