Nigeria: Shipwreck results in tragic loss of 26 lives

Yesterday, in Nigeria, a tragic incident occurred where a boat carrying more than 100 people capsized in the Niger River. As a result, at least 26 people lost their lives in this devastating accident that occurred in the western state of Niger.

A ship sinking occurred on the River Niger in Mokwa territory and those heading to a farm situated on the opposite bank were the unfortunate victims.

According to a statement by the Niger State Emergency Agency (NSEMA) spokesperson, Ibrahim Husseini, the ongoing rescue operation has resulted in the recovery of 26 bodies and the rescue of over 30 people.

Garba Salihu, Director General of NSEMA, said the incident happened in Gbajibo community, situated between Jabba and Kainji dams, at approximately 7:30am local time.

During the month of June, a shipwreck occurred on the same river which resulted in the tragic loss of over 100 lives.

Boat incidents are a frequent occurrence in Nigeria, often resulting from overloaded ships and inadequate maritime transport regulations.

Governor Umaro Bago of Niger State expressed his regret over the “painful and distressing” calamity and conveyed his solidarity with the communities that were affected.
