On Thursday afternoon, the First Secretary of the Coordination Committee of the Frelimo party in the Matundo neighborhood, located in Tete, Manuel Gaia, suffered serious attacks while returning from work. The Frelimo party accuses the head of the Renamo list, Ricardo Tomás, of ordering the attack.
According to information from STV, the attackers were identified as Renamo members and supporters.
The victim reported: “I was already on my way home when the attackers were leaving. I realized it was a Renamo group that said: 'Yes, that's the one, get him'. I was attacked, and they said: 'We want to finish him off. These are the ones that cause us problems here.' Some of them were armed with iron bars and others with sticks. I was beaten until I lost consciousness and bled.”
The Frelimo party in Tete deeply regretted the incident and reported that it had filed a complaint with the judicial authorities.
Roberto Isaías, Frelimo representative in Tete, stated: “We have initiated legal proceedings against these three suspects, Mr. Ricardo and other citizens who are not widely known to the public at this time. The best known is the head of the list, who has a history of delinquent behavior, is an agitator and a criminal.”
In turn, the spokesperson for the Renamo electoral campaign in Tete, Nuno Zacarias, denied Frelimo's accusations, stating that they do not correspond to the truth. He explained that during a Renamo march, an unknown individual, possibly drunk, tried to approach the party's head of list, Ricardo Tomás, and the Renamo security team technically removed him. According to Zacarias, the individual ended up rolling over the rocks, and therefore the allegations of violence are not true.
