Police officer tried for inciting actions related to a coup d'état

AIM

In the province of Inhambane, located in southern Mozambique, the Public Prosecutor's Office requested, in court, on Tuesday, September 12, a severe prison sentence for a police officer from the Rapid Intervention Unit (UIR) who is being accused of inciting collective disobedience and attempted coup d'état through sharing messages via WhatsApp. These messages aimed to mobilize other members of the corporation to rebel against salary delays, with threats to remove the Commander-in-Chief (the President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi) from Ponta Vermelha (the official residence of the head of state) and to paralyze the country. .

During the trial at the Inhambane Judicial Court, Maurílio de Sousa, a public prosecutor, requested a sentence of 30 years in prison to discourage the spread of messages that promote coups d'état through social networks. Furthermore, the Public Ministry requested compensation of 500,000 meticais (equivalent to 7,822.08 US dollars at the current exchange rate) in favor of the State, claiming that the authorities needed to take preventive measures in the face of the threat of this demonstration.

During the trial, the defendant denied being the author of the message, stating that he forwarded it to the Commander-General of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM), Bernardino Rafael, with the intention of warning him. He emphasized his commitment as a member of the PRM to defending national sovereignty.

The implementation of the new Single Salary Table (TSU) resulted in salary delays in several sectors of the Public Administration in Mozambique, including members of the Defense and Security Forces, who reported delays of at least two months in the payment of their salaries. The Ministry of Economy and Finance attributed these delays to problems in the new payment system, which was migrated to a single system from June, replacing the previous system that involved the Ministries of Interior and Defense.

On August 11, the President of Mozambique, Filipe Nyusi, demanded an urgent solution to salary delays and discrepancies resulting from the implementation of the TSU, emphasizing the importance of timely payment of salaries and declaring that he would not tolerate excuses.
