Transporters complain of robberies at the Ressano Garcia border

Transporters on the Mozambique–South Africa route complain of recurring attacks on their vehicles at night, at the Ressano Garcia border. They say that the problem is facilitated by the congestion of trucks on the road.

Night trips to neighboring South Africa or Mozambique, via the Ressano Garcia border, are subject to restrictions. Transporters complain about recurring robberies, especially in the dead of night.

Alberto Maluleque travels the Maputo–Durban route, from the Junta Interprovincial and International Bus Terminal. Last Thursday, he witnessed an assault on the South African side.

“They attacked an Isuzu car, injured three people, took money and all property, but the South African Police did not react. They come out in groups of twenty or thirty men, with machetes and weapons and rob us at the border”, said the transporter.

The congestion of trucks that occurs on that section is pointed out by transporters as the problem that facilitates robberies, which have been recorded frequently.

“The trucks leaving South Africa for Maputo arrive there and close the path through the huge queues. Small cars are also lined up in rows, which is why robbers come out of the woods and attack us in traffic jams”, explained Jonas Fumo.
