Violence in Cabo Delgado continues to be a“major concern for the Private Sector,

The president of the Confederation of Economic Associations of Mozambique expressed his growing concern about persistent armed violence in Cabo Delgado, even after a recent rebel attack in Mocímboa da Praia raised renewed concerns.

Agostinho Vuma stated: “The situation in Cabo Delgado continues to be a major concern for us.” He mentioned that a new study is underway to assess the current impact of armed attacks on companies operating in that northern province of Mozambique.

These statements were made during a press conference held in Maputo, after a meeting with the European Union (EU) ambassador to Mozambique, Antonino Maggiore. This followed an additional attack last week in Mocímboa da Praia, which was claimed by the Islamic State terrorist organization through its propaganda channels. The attack left at least 10 people dead in a village in the interior of the district.

The CTA president noted that a study carried out in 2021 indicated a negative impact of around 90 million dollars (84 million euros) on the business sector due to conflicts in northern Mozambique. He added that initiatives are underway, including with the EU, to support entrepreneurs and revitalize business in Cabo Delgado.

Vuma emphasized that this issue does not only concern the CTA as a private sector, as it also depends significantly on the actions of the forces fighting the insurgency. He highlighted that the new study on the impact of conflicts will be developed taking into account the return of communities and the resumption of economic activities in some regions.

The province of Cabo Delgado has faced an armed insurgency for almost six years, with some of the attacks claimed by the extremist group Islamic State.
